What happens when a young man says yes to God and keeps saying yes for decades?
The answer is found in the life of Archbishop Francis Wale Oke, who celebrates his 70th birthday on 8 September 2026.
Seventy years is more than just a number. It represents decades of experiences, challenges, victories, lessons, and, most importantly, a life committed to serving God.
For Archbishop Wale Oke, this milestone comes with another significant achievement: his recent elevation from Bishop to Archbishop by the Calvary Grace International College of Bishops.
The elevation took place during the Annual Holy Ghost Convention of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State. It was a moment of honour, but for the Archbishop, it was also a fresh call to greater responsibility.
From Evangelism to Episcopacy
One interesting part of Archbishop Wale Oke’s story is that he did not spend his early years chasing titles. His passion was evangelism.
After responding to God’s call in 1976, he devoted himself to preaching the gospel. He traveled extensively across Nigeria and other parts of the world, reaching people through crusades, prayer meetings, and other evangelistic programs.
In fact, when the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa wanted to consecrate him as a bishop in 1988, he declined.
Why?
He was deeply passionate about evangelism and believed God wanted him to focus there.
Even after Archbishop Idahosa told him, “You are next,” Wale Oke continued to avoid opportunities for episcopal consecration for several years.
Eventually, he yielded to the Holy Spirit’s prompting and was consecrated as a bishop in the United Kingdom in 1999. Three months later, the consecration was repeated at the Garden of Victory in Ibadan. T
A Leader Who Raises Leaders
One of the strongest parts of Archbishop Wale Oke’s legacy is his commitment to developing other people.
He has been described as a “father of fathers, pastor of pastors and bishop of bishops” because of the number of Christian leaders he has mentored, encouraged and helped to develop.
The Calvary Grace International College of Bishops grew out of his desire to mentor younger ministers. What began as a mentorship fellowship eventually developed into the College of Bishops, with members now spread across different parts of the world. More than 50 bishops associated with the College have received spiritual oversight and fatherly leadership through the organisation.
Building Beyond the Pulpit
Archbishop Wale Oke’s influence has extended beyond preaching.
In 1989, he founded Christ Life Church after years of itinerant evangelism. The church has grown to more than 200 branches across Nigeria.
Through the Sword of the Spirit Ministries International, he has also conducted major evangelistic programs and the Annual Holy Ghost Convention, which has continued for more than three decades.
He is also the founder of the International Bible College of Ministries and Seminary (IBCOMS), through which ministers are equipped for Christian service.
Another initiative associated with him is The Nigeria Turning Point, a prayer and intercession program in Abuja that brings people together to pray for Nigeria.
His ministry has also established works beyond Nigeria, including in the United Kingdom, Russia and the United States.
A New Chapter at 70
The elevation of Bishop Francis Wale Oke to Archbishop is significant because it recognizes years of service, leadership and mentorship. But he does not see the title as a reward to sit back and enjoy. He described the elevation as a call to greater responsibility in advancing Christ’s cause globally.
In a world where many people chase recognition, followers, likes, positions, and titles, Archbishop Wale Oke’s journey reminds us that character should come before recognition and service should come before status.
